Cutting Up is Hard to Do: the Parameterized Complexity of k-Cut and Related Problems

چکیده
The Graph k-Cut problem is that of finding a set of edges of minimum total weight, in an edge-weighted graph, such that their removal from the graph results in a graph having at least k connected components. An algorithm with a running time of O(nk 2 ) for this problem has been known since 1988, due to Goldschmidt and Hochbaum. We show that the problem is hard for the parameterized complexity class W [1]. We also investigate the complexity of a related problem, Cutting A Few Vertices from a Graph, that asks for the minimum cost of separating at least k vertices from an edge-weighted connected graph. We show that this problem also is hard for W [1].

Subexponential Parameterized Algorithms Collapse the W - hierarchy ∗ ( Extended
It is shown that for essentially all MAX SNP-hard optimization problems finding exact solutions in subexponential time is not possible unless W [1] = FPT . In particular, we show that O(2p(n)) parameterized algorithms do not exist for Vertex Cover, Max Cut, Max c-Sat, and a number of problems on bounded degree graphs such as Dominating Set and Independent Set, unless W [1] = FPT . Our results a...

متن کاملPaths of Bounded Length and Their Cuts: Parameterized Complexity and Algorithms
We study the parameterized complexity of two families of problems: the bounded length disjoint paths problem and the bounded length cut problem. From Menger’s theorem both problems are equivalent (and computationally easy) in the unbounded case for single source, single target paths. However, in the bounded case, they are combinatorially distinct and are both NP-hard, even to approximate. Our r...
متن کاملOn the Kernelization Complexity of Problems on Graphs without Long Odd Cycles
Several NP-hard optimization problems, like Maximum Independent Set, q-Coloring, and Max-Cut are polynomial time solvable on bipartite graphs. An equivalent characterization of bipartite graphs is that it is the set of all graphs that do not contain any odd length cycle. Thus, a natural question here is what happens to the complexity of these problems if we know that the length of the longest o...
متن کاملEvaluation of Cutting Performance of Diamond Saw Machine Using Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) Algorithm
Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are used for solving the intractable engineering problems. In this study, it is aimed to study the application of artificial bee colony algorithm for predicting the performance of circular diamond saw in sawing of hard rocks. For this purpose, varieties of fourteen types of hard rocks were cut in laboratory using a cutting rig at 5 mm depth of cut, 40 cm/...
